The FAM19 exhibition celebrates the works of undergraduate and Honours students studying the Fine Art Major at the UWA School of Design. Each student will showcase an artwork that reflects what they have learned and experienced throughout their degree. This exhibition truly demonstrates the diversity of UWA Fine Art students, with their various backgrounds, and studies within inter-faculty broadening units and second majors.
A major take-away from our degree is that making art gives voices to those who are otherwise unheard, and in ways that anyone can relate; this is why we believe it is so important to support the arts. The exhibition will showcase our diverse range of personalities, interests and beliefs in multiple art forms, including but not limited to painting; film; performance; photography; illustration; sculpture; and installation works.

My practice has mainly been focused on expressionist and abstract illustration using different kinds of materials. However, over the course of my Fine Arts Major, I’ve been supported in pursuing other mediums such as video, performance and installation.

‘Take Up Arms!’ celebrates op shops’ sustainability, affordability and ability to make a difference. Reid’s “coat of arms” symbolises her passion for recycled fashion. Weighing over 7kg, Reid’s laughable coat showcases the ridiculously serious weight behind the plight of fast fashion. Take up arms against a sea of troubles! A battle cry, calling YOU to fight fast fashion – for good.

This piece is part of a mini comic collection and bedroom installation. It is the story of a young adult who finds out the world is ending in 18 months. In that time, she carries on with her life, living the best and worst moments along with the everyday mundanity. Over the months, the growing anxiety starts to weigh on her.

My practice references my own background as a second-generation Chinese-Australian, drawing on the feelings of alienation and displacement. Without 境 (borders) works to engage the viewer in the ambiguous yet strangely familiar nature of home and identity.

Espousal of digital dependence

The Espousal of digital dependence explores the mundane act of exploring the vicissitudes on the internet and how various technologies (such as html coding poetics) become the catalyst of this sculptural self-portrait. The absorption of virtual worlds is reformed into a digital playground, made from rigid weld mesh entwined with touches of playful saturated hues.
