Pelican Is Hiring Section Editors

The hunt has begun, and we’re looking at you.
Why we want YOU!

We want you because you believe in the value of student press and love our strange lil bird-based magazine. We want you because you’ve got amazing ideas for what Pelican can be next year. We also want you because you’re damn good-looking and have the skills to pull it off. We are assembling the Pelican 2017 Editorial team like a structurally sound salad, and baby we want you!

What we’re looking for specifically are 2 incredible individuals (Fashion and News) to join our Editorial Team in 2017, so if you feel sturdy and compact like corned beef, and have a passion for one of these areas you might well be the one we’re searching for (with open eyes akin to peeled eggs).

The perks of Joining the Pelican Family

It’s not all roughage related though, joining the Pelican family has plenty of perks – free stuff (books, film screenings, music), madgood industry connections, a major upgrade to your resume that screams employability, and a ready made bunch of new pals (that’s us) to eat paddle pops with whilst you get an all round life enriching experience that will leave you levelled up for life.

What does an Editor need to do?

Apart from being the physical embodiment of all things weird, brilliant, and beautiful, Pelican Editors need to be passionate about their section, super organised, and have a strong belief in the value of student press. As an Editor your role is to encourage and develop our contributors by providing constructive feedback in the editing process, and by creating opportunities for writers and artists.

The Fashion Editor is responsible for:

  • Producing 2-4 pages of content for each of the print editions (4 remaining in 2017)
  • Producing regular digital content, including videos, podcasts, web articles, and social media
  • Working with contributors to edit submissions, and providing constructive feedback to contributors
  • Maintaining and developing industry contacts
  • Attending editorial meetings and Pelican related events such as launch parties and workshops.
  • Co-ordinating review and interview opportunities for contributors
  • Encouraging new writers and artists to contribute to Pelican

The News Editor is responsible for:

  • Organising and covering news events around campus and Perth
  • Producing regular digital content, including videos, podcasts, web articles, and social media
  • Working with contributors to edit submissions, and providing constructive feedback to contributors
  • Maintaining and developing industry contacts
  • Attending weekly editorial meetings and Pelican related events such as launch parties and workshops.
  • Co-ordinating article opportunities for contributors
  • Encouraging new writers and artists to contribute to Pelican
  • Please include an example news article with your application

(btw we don’t expect you to be able to do all of those things straight away – as your Boss Editors we’ll be there for you; to support and help you in every way we can)

How To Apply

There are 2 stages to the application process – the written application and the interview.

The written application needs to be emailed to [email protected] by midnight Tuesday 23 May 2017. All you need to do is send us:

  1. Your current resume and
  2. A one page statement explaining your vision for your section (Fashion or News). In your statement we want to get a sense of who you are (what are you into? why do you want to be a Section Editor?), how you will encourage contributors to get involved in your section, and most importantly what ideas you have for both print and digital content. FYI you can and should apply for more than 1 position, just make sure you write a separate statement for each section that you want to apply for.
  3. For the News Editor ONLY an example of a news article – News reporting is a pretty specific form of journalism, so we’d like to know that we’re on the same page re what’s expected of a reporter. Please send us an example news article (either published or unpublished) that shows us an what kind of reporter you are. The article can be on anything news worthy, but if you need a prompt write on the recent changes to UWA’s exam times.

And that’s all we need!! As soon as we receive your written application we’ll send you an email confirmation which will also contain information about the second stage (the interview). We will be running interviews on Friday 26 May 2017.

If you have any questions about the positions, or about the application process, shoot us an email ([email protected]) or message us on facebook.
